I recommend the following places to eat and drink:
Kingsway Hall Hotel
66 Great Queen St, London WC2B 5BX
If you are looking for a great afternoon tea experience this is it, there are plenty of delicious and unlimited pastries and sandwiches.
Coffee & Candy
70 Russell Square, London WC1B 5BA
Though the place is quaint, the pastries and coffee here are excellent. Plus they give student discounts that make them very affordable for morning coffee runs.
Blue Lion Pub
133 Gray's Inn Road, London WC1X 8TU
This pub offers a pretty relaxed atmosphere with a roaring fireplace and large round tables to go out and have a drink with your roommates.
The Lucas Arms Pub
245A Gray's Inn Road, London WC1X 8QY
Sunday roast here is a must, the food is excellent and they give you unlimited peas.
The Jack Horner
234-236 Tottenham Court Rd, London W1T 7QJ
This place has some awesome chips and burgers and a great selection of beers.
Byron Burger
6 Store Street, London WC1E 7DQ
A classic, similar to Shake Shack, every burger here is perfect.

Rocket (pub)
If you are missing the louder, merrier bar atmosphere of the US as opposed to the pub atmosphere of the UK, The Rocket is the place to go. Located on Euston Road, it stays open late(r) than the vast majority of other pubs in the area, and has a small dance floor.
Rising Sun (pub)
With cheaply priced drinks and a quiet tone, pop in here for a pint at night. Located on Tottenham Court Road, it is part of the Taylor Walker chain.
Concoro (restaurant)
Incredible ramen, and about a 10 minute walk from campus. I used to head here after the British culture class with friends for a late dinner. Located by the British Museum.

If students are avid-book lovers then Skoob in the Brunswick Centre is always a good place for books. I can't guarantee that there are textbooks there for you, but there are often cheaply priced books that you can buy, and at the end of the year, they might take some of your books off your hands for you (Money? Yes please). Be sure to keep track of the time though - I once spent two hours in there and was late for a meeting! (Bonus: there's a piano inside. Someone told me that the owners will let you play, but you have to ask nicely. This might only be a rumour, though).
And if anyone's looking for a pub, the Friend at Hand around the corner from Russell Square Tube Station is one of my favourite pubs in London. It's quieter for a late lunch, and the people have always been really, really nice whenever I go.
A fish and chips shop that I liked (mostly for sentimental reasons, but also it's good) is North Sea Restaurant, up on Leigh Street. It can get pricey, but if you split the dinner between two, it's decent. Maybe for a special occasion?
And lastly, I can't recommend enough the market every Saturday morning at the Brunswick Centre (1030-1730). I didn't find out about the market until halfway through the first month of the semester, which remains one of my biggest regrets to this day. There's a bunch of food there from different cultures (paella, takoyaki, duck confit, burgers, churros....just to name a few) and mostly everything is a standard £5 (for a lot of food, not bad!). Get the risotto, it's really good. And if Galeta is there selling cookies, BUY ALL THE COOKIES. Be aware though that this market is primarily food, and not a typical 'farmers market' as you might expect in America! Skoobs also makes an appearance here at the market; browse their collection and see what they have to offer for really low prices.

KATHARINE, FALL 2015 NYUL RA
My favorite type of entertainment is the theatre. There's no better way to get a sense of a local culture and community than going to where new stories are told about the people (in many different ways) on stages across the city.
Best theatre ever? The National Theatre along the south bank of the River. From the staging to the lighting to the brutalist, concrete building, everything about the National is an experience to remember. The bookshop is a great place to browse around for every single play text you could possibly be searching for (as well as fun, novelty souvenir items related to these play texts and/or novels), and there are many places on the different levels of the building to lounge about and enjoy the view (you're totally allowed to be there even if you don't have a ticket for a play).
Aside from the National Theatre's rather avante-garde productions, other productions I would recommend kicking off your London theatre experience with include the well-known War Horse and Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
