Riding the bus may not be as fast as taking the Tube, but there are many benefits to taking the bus.
Consistent fares and convenience. There are no zones and no ‘peak’ times so the fare is always the same for a single (£1.50), although you cannot transfer to another bus without paying again. Buses also run 24 hours a day, with night buses and identified by the letter N in front of the number. For example, at nighttime the 38 route becomes N38. Note that not all day routes will have an equivalent night route. Paying for the bus. With the bus you simply touch in with your Oyster Card when you board. You do not need to touch again when you leave the bus. |

The quickest way to get around London is by taking the Tube, run by Transport for London. Also known as the Underground, there are 11 lines which serve over 270 stations.
Check your route plan before you travel. Use the online Journey Planner to make sure you don't end up stranded somewhere. London is spilt into travel zones with the price per journey increasing depending how far you travel. You do not have to pay extra for transferring lines, as long as it is one complete journey. Pay for the Tube. To pay for the Tube you use an Oyster Card, which is essentially a smart card. You top-up either online, at a manned kiosk, or at the self-pay machines. You need to ‘touch in’ and ‘touch out’ when you start and complete the journey so that the machines will deduct the relevant amounts from your balance. Consider purchasing a Travelcard. With a Travelcard one can travel as much as they please with any mode of public transportation within the London Transport network (with some exceptions). A daily Travelcard for zones 1-2 will cost £6.50. You will not need to purchase a Travelcard if you have an Oyster Card, since your Oyster Card will cap your payments automatically! Daily and weekly tickets are valid until 4:30AM the day after it expires. Check out some of the discounts that are available. Purchasing a Network Railcard will give you discounted day Travelcards on weekends and public holidays. Purchasing a 16-25 Railcard will give you 1/3 off on off-peak single pre-pay fares, and your daily cap ceiling will also be even lower. See here for details. |
For Central London (zones 1-2), approximate operating hours are: MON-SAT 5:45-00:45 SUN 7:00-11:45 QUICK FARE FINDER (OFF PEAK):
*Off-Peak Adult Fares, Mondays to Fridays except public holidays:
Peak prices vary. This is calculated from when you touch in, not when you touch out. Example: if you are touching in at 15:58 or 19:01 you will be charged the off-peak rate, saving some money! |
